Mold, a spore-producing fungus, grows in places where humidity or dampness is high. Because these fungal spores commonly float in the air and can be inhaled, it is important to rid your home of any mold in order to prevent health-related problems. Basements are a very favorable environment for mold growth; therefore it is vital to know how to get rid of mold in basement nooks and crannies.
Finding that Mold in Your Basement
The first place to look when attempting to find any mold in your home’s basement is a spot that could have leaked or is currently leaking. Search for such areas around:
- Pipes
- Windows
- Outside doors
Removing Basement Mold
Now you want to get rid of the mold growing in your basement. If you are prone to allergies, have asthma or a weak immune system, it would be best if someone else does this task. If the mold you find is growing on boxes or fabrics, the best way to handle it is to discard the item it is growing on. Since the mold is not considered hazardous material, you can simply discard such items in the trash. To avoid releasing spores into the air in your home, you can place any materials you are hauling out of the home in plastic bags.
Remember to dig deep. When you see some evidence of mold that could be behind wallboard or within insulation, you will need to remove and replace such items. Any smaller areas of 10 square feet or less, you can scrub with soapy water and a hard-bristle brush. Be sure to let the area dry thoroughly so you won’t have a recurrence of mold growth.
Call a Professional When Needed
If the area containing mold is more than 10 square feet in area, you would be smart to call for a professional to accomplish this mold removal for you.
